I hear nothing—I think of nothing—I reflect upon nothing…I have never worked so hard before—with so much anxiety.” --Conrad, during the composition of Nostromo

First edition of Joseph Conrad’s Nostromo,
a magnificent copy

Conrad, Joseph. Nostromo: A Tale of the Seaboard. London and New York: Harper & Brothers, 1904. Octavo, original blue cloth.   $2200

First edition, first printing (with p.187 marked 871) of the novel Conrad considered “his most important work, the one ‘dearest to his heart’” (Najder). “Nostromo is a political novel in the profoundest meaning of the word—this is the index of Conrad’s achievement—it may stand as a picture of the modern world in microcosm” (Allen). Cloth remarkably fresh with just the slightest rubbing, spine gilt unusually bright. A lovely copy.
